This resource will provide many opportunities for work in the foundation subjects and in English Speaking & Listening (S&L). Below is a framework which gives an overview of the material to be covered during the course of the week. You can use this to show to your senior management team if you need to.

Day 1 - Gathering information about climate change

 

Focus:
What is climate change

Focus:
More on climate change

Activities:

Brainstorm – what we know about climate change and our questions; watching and discussing short video clips and animations; sequencing pictures about the greenhouse effect; answering questions about local-global links.

Activities:
Science experiment; fill in the missing words; research.

Day 2 - The effects of climate change in different countries Focus:
The effects of climate change in different countries

Focus:
More on the effects of climate change past, present and future

Activities:
Looking at case studies and drawing strip cartoons of the effects of climate change on people’s lives; using maps and a climate change calendar to identify which countries produce most carbon dioxide emissions per capita and discuss possible reasons; card game to think about how they can present what they have learnt.
Activities:
Writing stories based on case studies; devising interviews for older relatives; writing a story about the effects of climate change in the future.

Day 3 - Our contribution to climate change

Focus:
Fossil fuels in our everyday lives

Focus:

Climate-friendly lifestyles

Activities:
Listing everyday activities and where they use fossil fuels; making flow-charts of the fossil fuel energy that goes into breakfast cereals; brainstorming how we could use less fossil fuel.

Activities:

Climate change quiz; writing stories about life using less fossil fuel; discussion of needs and wants; following up interviews from Day 2.

Day 4 - What we can do

Focus:

Planning for action – energy use at school

Focus:

Energy conservation at home

Activities:
School energy survey; using an interactive poster to find ways of making a school more sustainable; action planning.

Activities:

Science activity about insulation; designing an energy-efficient home; school travel survey.

Day 5 - Spreading the message

Focus:

Sharing what we have learnt

Focus:

Finishing off and reflecting

Activities:

Reviewing learning from the week’s activities and identifying any gaps; discussion and role play about how to get a message across to an identified audience; designing presentations.

Activities:

Designing and sharing presentations; evaluation.
