Guatemala is a small country in Central America. Approximately 90 per cent of the population is descended from the Mayan people, who lived in Guatemala before the Spanish invaded in 1524.

Population: 13.2m

Language: Spanish and at least 21 Mayan indigenous languages, and two other indigenous languages.

Capital city: Guatemala City

Currency: Quetzal (7-8 Quetzales to the US$)

Life expectancy at birth: 68 years

Access to safe water: 68 per cent

Literacy: 95 per cent

Infant mortality: 45 per 1000 live births

The term ‘the South’ is used to describe low- and middle- income countries in Asia, Africa. Latin America, and the Middle East. Richer countries are called ‘the North’.
