Our Food, Our World
|
Our Food, Our World is a new photopack for 5 to 9 year olds. Based on the five children featured in Let’s Eat! Children and their food around the world (published by Frances Lincoln in association with Oxfam in 2003), this photopack provides 32 A4 photocards, an A1 poster map, a CD-ROM and a booklet full of useful activities related to food and nutrition. |
Information about the pack
These pages have been adapted from Oxfam’s new print publication, Our Food, Our World which you can order online. The printed pack features five children from different countries: Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, France and India. You may also be interested in the original book Let’s Eat! Children and their food around the world.
Our Food, Our World is designed to encourage young learners to reflect on the food they eat and to make positive comparisons with children of similar ages who live in other countries. While there are many contrasts to be seen among the diets and lifestyles of the children, the material emphasises the similarities and crossovers which come with childhood and our shared need for healthy food. Our Food, Our World also aims to challenge the negative stereotypes which can gather round people from the ‘South’. The tone is one of learning from as well as about our different ways, near and far.
Our Food, Our World emphasises positive handling of diversity and difference in conjunction with an emphasis on the things which all children have in common, no matter what their location and setting. The more the work is grounded in local and familiar experience, the better children are able to develop a flexible, open-minded understanding of the unfamiliar.
