Reacting to the UK Prime Minister’s announcement of £1.44 billion for the Green Climate Fund, Oxfam’s Climate Policy Advisor, Kiri Hanks, said:

“We welcome the UK’s decision to step up and pledge its fair share to the Green Climate Fund.

“Some of the poorest people in the world – those living in the path of cyclones in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, people in the Horn of Africa blighted by drought or those in South Asia facing floods – are already feeling the effects of climate change that they did the least to cause.

“It’s vital that wealthy countries with the highest emissions contribute to the Fund and work together with those most affected to adapt to the changing climate and mitigate its effects.

“The UK joins the countries who are setting the bar by doubling their pledge, sending a strong signal to others that backtracking is not ok.”
