Ramadan: The Generosity of the Muslim Community and the Impact of Zakat
As the Interim CEO of Oxfam GB, I am privileged to witness firsthand the incredible generosity and compassion of individuals around the world. This generosity is particularly evident during the holy month of Ramadan, a time of spiritual reflection, fasting, and giving for Muslims worldwide.
Ramadan holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims. It is a time of increased devotion, self-discipline, and community spirit. But perhaps most importantly, it is a time of sharing one’s blessings and resources with others.
The Muslim community's commitment to charitable giving during Ramadan is truly inspiring. During Ramadan, Muslims from all diverse cultural backgrounds unite in practicing generosity and compassion, showcasing the universal values of Islam. Their generosity knows no bounds, and their impact is profound.

Each year, Muslims in the UK play a role in supporting humanitarian efforts globally, including through Zakat donations to Oxfam GB. Through the practice of Zakat, Muslims fulfil one of the Five Pillars of Islam by sharing their wealth with those less fortunate. It involves donating a portion of one's wealth, typically 2.5% of savings and assets, to those in need. Zakat is not just a religious obligation; it is a powerful tool for social justice and poverty alleviation, that serves as a means of purifying one’s wealth and promoting equality.
We do so by partnering with local organisations and communities in countries like Bangladesh, the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), Syria, and Yemen to provide essential support, including food, clean water, and livelihood support, to those affected by conflict, poverty, and natural disasters.
The impact of British Muslims' Zakat giving extends far beyond material assistance; it is a testament to the values of compassion, justice, and solidarity that unite us all. It serves as a powerful reminder that regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs, we are all interconnected members of a global community, bound together by our shared humanity.
This Ramadan, let us renew our commitment to serving others and making a positive difference in the world. And let us be grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a more just and equitable society.
On behalf of Oxfam GB, I extend my deepest gratitude to the Muslim community for their generosity and support. Your kindness and compassion are truly making a difference in the lives of countless individuals around the world.
Wishing you all a blessed Ramadan filled with peace, joy, and blessings.
